My first writing desk in Chicago

These past three years I’ve pulled two Mary Tyler Moore’s and moved in different directions across the country, jumped out of a plane, had three bouts of cancer, written books and a national column, learned how to walk again, watched all of my savings drain away, lost and regained weight, rebuilt everything and reconnected with my grown son, Louie.

It’s all good. A lot of you have come on the journey with me as we rooted for each other, laughed a lot, let go and said a prayer when we found ourselves in a tight corner and found out how much we really mean to each other. Every step of the way we were trying to figure out how to build a bigger life while reminding ourselves to be of service.

Every time I can remember that God has my back so I don’t need to sweat the rest I can feel my shoulders drop down to where they belong and my breath comes more easily. I need that reminder generally on a daily basis. Then I can head back out there, stop making any of it about me and see how I can be useful to someone else.

I’ve found it to be the magic spell that lets go of worry and helps me to be present in the moment.
